Jazz and queer culture share a rich but largely unknown intersecting history. Especially in Austin, Texas - a city with a beautiful jazz scene and an equally integral queer culture - I believe it is vital to educate the public about how these worlds collide. There are hundreds of queer jazz musicians, - Gladys Bentley, Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, who shaped the earliest blues - all the way to modern voices like Gary Burton, Fred Hersch, and Richard Cortez - who help redefine both avant garde and traditional American Songbook palettes.
